Institutions’ Fees Overlook the Dispossessed

By AYABONGA NKALITSHANA
The fees must fall protest has opened up abrasions and memories of the 1976 protest, and the slow reaction of the government to answer the appeal by students of reducing higher education fees, and abiding to the constitution by actually making education free and accessible to all. This indicates that the freedom we claim to enjoy today is not for all but the freedom of the economically liberated class, the struggle still continues for the economically deprived.
It has helped to identify the socio-economic inequalities that exist in society. The privileges being enjoyed by the top brass of our government, has blinded them of the real issues being faced by the people on the ground.

The ignorance of human rights clauses that the government keeps doing is evidence that, instead of moving forward our country, is reverting back to the eras of apartheid and separation of classes. The government has no consideration about the power the civil citizens has on decision making and election of government.

Department of Police: Late-night Patrols

By: Luviwe Pinda

We often ask ourselves, how often the police do the late-night patrols. Furthermore, how safe are we, as the community in Alice. Many people have different ways of enjoying their weekends and holidays, but what does the Police Department have to offer? Individuals would either get robbed whilst walking home, and get stabbed to death; some of the owner’s homes are broken into and moreover, by the time a victim reports a case of armed robbery or hijacking, the case will impede for a very extensive time.
The perpetrators often target individuals who travel the railway crossing, the small bridge close to the Anglican Church, the road leading to the Lovedale College and Ntselamanzi Township especially when it’s unobtrusive and gloomy,  and in addition, those who walk close to the town’s cemetery. Do the police ever make an effort to drive to these places? What part of initiative do they form within the department?
This brings an excruciating pain to the residents, that when their loved is found dead in any of these parts of the municipality, and have to bear the consequences of burying them. It’s time now that the department take part in making this community, a better and safeguarded place for the society.

Attractive Nuisance

BY: SAMKELE  LETESE

Have you looked around your neighborhood, town or city lately? How many abandoned buildings do you see? If none, your neighborhood, town or city is healthy or has a healthy municipality. According to an article published in www.infrastructurene.ws, entitled ‘Challenges in Smaller Municipalities’, smaller municipalities struggle to operate and maintain their services infrastructure in a cost-effective and sustainable way. The amount of abandoned buildings is in direct correlation with the efficiency of the towns’ municipality, meaning the abandoned buildings are a sign of the town’s health.
Alice and Beaufort are riddled with abandoned buildings around its towns respectively. These buildings pose a potentially dangerous threat to the community at large. Within them it is common to find gang related activity, gang graffiti, drug dealings and other more horrid activity. Another common finding in these buildings is waste which may be potentially hazardous. These building can also be used by squatters.
These buildings can also be very dangerous if the structure is very old and neglected, because they are often falling apart. The article ‘The Dangers of Abandoned Buildings’ by Rebekah Brooks, warns against the exploration of these buildings on the count that one might get “lost, stranded or physically hurt”. These buildings are called Problem Buildings or a better way of putting it, Attractive Nuisance.
Attractive Nuisance, in law, a doctrine of tort law under which a person who creates or permits to exist on his or her land a dangerous condition attractive to children, as an unfenced swimming pool, is liable for their resulting injuries, even though the injured are trespassers.

Now with that said, looking at your neighborhood, your town or your city, how safe do you feel with these buildings sitting there, near businesses, or even residential areas? How healthy is your municipality?

Pistorius’ release may be diminutive

By: Luviwe Pinda

South African Paralympic Oscar Pistorius (28) will have to abide with the parole conditions been set to him. He was released on Monday night having served his one year of his five year sentence, and will spend the remaining four years at home. He was convicted with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines’ Day two years ago. His freedom may be momentary than expected. He should’ve been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The big question rises, what will happen if the same precedent will be set for the murderers who murdered the elderly couple from Alice four years ago in August, and the farmer who was found bashed to death on his farm outside Seymour earlier this year in April? These are some of the concerns we need to contemplate before the Supreme Court of Appeal grants parole to the condemned murderers.

ANC:  LEADERSHIP WITH INCONSISTENCIES

BY: AYABONGA NKALITSHANA AND LUVIWE PINDA

The infighting within the ANC which is the ruling party in South Africa, the corruption scandals involving the president of the country and his allies whom some hold top roles in government institutions , the biggest in corruption being the R250 millions of Nkandla. The mass killing of workers in Marikina, and now the protests of tertiary institutions that are actually as a result of fee increase proposals by department of higher education and training.

Question is, do we still think as citizens of South Africa can trust the ANC and its leadership to lead the government and do you think that there is any leader presently involved in any political party who has the ability to lead with honesty and loyalty to the people, and can actually lead the country to political stability and economic independence and social justice?

South Africa: Tertiary education endangered

BY:  AYABONGA NKALITSHANA

Higher education a looming problem in South Africa as students fight over fee increments in both tuition and residences with most students coming from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and can barely afford even the current fees in higher education. The question is, does South Africa have the capacity and resources to maintain its goal to have a high number of intellects both in the public and the private sector without having to ask for help to the international community? Even the institutions known to have the highest standard of tertiary education in the country are affected. (Rhodes University, Fort Hare University and Wits University) have embarked on protest actions as an attempt to have these problems looked into and resolved.

Is it a matter of policy or is it a matter of affordability?
